My child wants to play Roblox. From what age, and how?
Roblox is not an app. It is a platform with millions of games built by other users. Some are harmless. Some are not. That is the core problem.
What the age rating says
Germany's entertainment software rating body USK raised the age rating from 12 to 16 in early 2025. The reasons: violent content in user-generated games, uncontrolled chat functions and strong purchasing incentives through the in-game currency Robux.
Important to understand: USK ratings are not educational recommendations. They do not assess from what age a game is advisable, but from what age no serious negative effects are expected. Parents can decide for themselves. But: some of these games are very fast, loud and overstimulating. I strongly recommend choosing games together and setting a time limit through the parent account, agreed with the child.
What Roblox changed in 2026
Roblox introduced age-based accounts in 2026, rolled out worldwide from June 2026. Children aged 5 to 8 are automatically assigned a Kids account, with limited game access and communication turned off. Users aged 9 to 15 get a Select account with a curated game catalogue.
Since January 2026, chat requires an AI-based facial age estimation. This is meant to limit contact between children and adult strangers. It is not full protection, the estimation can be bypassed.
What Robux is and why it matters
Robux is Roblox's in-game currency. Children can use it to buy clothing for their avatar, unlock games or open loot boxes. Parents can set a monthly spending limit and activate notifications for high expenditure.
This should be set up before a child starts playing. Not afterwards.
Kuratu verdict
Roblox is not inherently dangerous. But it is an open platform where children can quickly encounter content that was not made for them. And if chat is active, they can be contacted by strangers.
We recommend Roblox from age 10 at the earliest. But the reality looks different: many children start asking from their first year of school, at around age 7. If Roblox is allowed that early, then only with supervision and very restrictive settings. The account must be linked to a parent account, spending and time limits must be set, chat must be restricted and parents should regularly check what is being played together.
From age 13: with clear agreements and open conversations about spending pressure and chat risks.
The more important questions than "may my child play Roblox" are: Do I know the platform well enough to know what my child is doing there? Have I checked whether it is suitable for my child? How does my child react when Roblox time ends? A child who can stop calmly is in a very different situation from one who escalates every time.
